Prompt: Favourite Character in a Work of Literary Fiction

A few weeks back I provided this prompt for the prompt-ly listserv, so it’s about time I follow up with my own blog post . After careful consideration I knew I had to write about two fictional characters. The first one should come as no surprise, if you have been reading this blog in the last two years.

1. James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser
He is the leading male character in Diana Gabaldon’s „Outlander” novel series and I fell in love with him from the start. Why? Because he is the most lovable fictional guy that has ever crossed my path. He is handsome. Funny. Thoughtful. Sexy. Smart. Brave. Caring. Sexy. Strong. Honourable. Gallant. Affectionate… Did I mention “sexy”?
Just like Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd (who might be my second favourite fictional guy) Jamie Fraser has the endearing habit of making all kind of “Hmph” noises. And he is Scot which means he has the most adorable accent, which you can’t actually read in print, but I can totally hear it, when I read it. Especially after listening to the wonderful audio books narrated by the amazing Davina Porter.
I maybe should mention, that Jamie Fraser isn’t without flaws, he can be verrrrry stubborn and he can have a temper and… well, there probably are a few more flaws, which I tend to overlook, because he is just such a great guy in general. The fact, that I obviously can’t write a more objective and well-founded post about why he is my favourite character, proves that I’m head over heels in love with him. I can’t help it. I’ll be forever grateful to Diana Gabaldon for bringing him to life and I can’t wait to „meet” him again in November, when Jamie Fraser and Lord John Grey will embark on a mysterious trip to Ireland in the novel „The Scottish Prisoner”.

2. Anne Shirley
I don’t know how well known Lucy Maud Montgomery’s „Anne of Green Gables” novel series is in the US or in European countries besides Germany. I know it’s a huge hit in Japan (don’t ask my why) and of course in Canada, because that’s where the story was written and where it’s taking place.
The first time I „met” Anne was on TV, when the mini-series was shown on TV here in Germany in November or December 1986 (or 1987?). It was a looong time ago, but I loved Anne from the start. Probably because we had two things in common: We loved books and we talked a lot. I still do both in fact :)
I got the „Anne of Green Gables” novel as a Christmas present that year and for three or four years after that I got the next book of this series as a Christmas present as well. I think I bought book 5 and 6 on my own later on, because I didn’t want to wait till Christmas again. I think this novel series might be the one I re-read the most as child/teenager. I think I read all books at least once a year.

For a looong time Prince Edward Island was the most „exotic” dream vacation spot for me. I remember getting travel guides from the library to read up on P.E.I. and I also remember dreaming about living there some day, with the perfect house near the beach and all. I still have very fond memories of all these childhood / young teenage girl’s dreams. Visiting this place of my childhood dreams was definitely one of the things on my bucket-list, even though I admit over the last few years I forgot a bit about it and didn’t actually think I’d ever make that come true. But I did!

Last autumn I went on an Indian Summer roadtrip in Canada / USA with three friends of mine and while we were planning our route I brought up P.E.I. (and my bucket-list *g*) and they all agreed that it would be a lovely place to visit and we did visit and had such a wonderful time. The weather was perfect, the Canadian people are so incredibly nice, the island is beautiful and actually being at „Green Gables” was a childhood dream come true and I was so happy that this did happen. Not necessarily because the experience itself was so extraordinarily special, but because the child in me had dreamt of this for so many years back then and this child was thrilled that the dream finally came true.

Nom nom nom. I don’t think I could have written a better description on why I love Jamie Fraser. Very loveable indeed!

Don’t display your ignorance. Neither character comes from a work of “literary fiction.”

Maybe I should have chosen “written fiction” then, because it was merely meant to distinguish it from fictional characters in movies or on TV.

Anne of Green Gables… I love it! For the longest time I wanted fiery red hair just like hers. Great post! (Stopping by from Prompt-ly.)
