It seems like all I do recently is take photos of amazingly colourful foliage. Well, also being busy with work and everyday stuff. And prepping for my NaNoWriMo adventure also has kept and is keeping me busy. I want to go into that well prepared, i.e. with a clear idea of what will happen in every scene and that means anything that goes beyond:
“Luke convinces Timmy to try out as goalie. Timmy is happy. Likes Luke a lot. Sam thinks about how out of place he felt at the party?”
:-) But of course the more I flesh out every one of those very short summaries into something a bit more solid – like describing in a few words what’s happening and what’s on the characters mind (not to mention decide on POV and other stuff) – the more new ideas keep flooding in. Or not so much ideas but “to think of” items, like personalities for some subcharacters. If you think the maincharacter’s brother-in-law should be married, that brother-in-law needs a wife and that wife needs a name and some basic characteristics (age, looks, job, personality etc). And bam you have to yet create another character, which might only make one quick appearance in the story. But I want to avoid one writing that scene and just then realize that there is a character missing and make her up in an instant.
And then I’m wondering if I’m paying too much attention to detail and if I not just better “go with the flow”. I guess I’m just terrified that the flow won’t happen once I start writing. I think I agree with Elizabeth George’s (one of my favourite mystery novelist) that writing will work so much better when you flesh out your characters and plot in advance. I’ve still got 40 more scenes to flesh out until the start of NaNoWriMo and I have no idea when I will find the time to do that.
Besides prepping for NaNoWriMo I’ve at least started reading the necessary study material for my last termpaper and started jotting down idea for the first few questions. I’m determined to incorparate working on it every week for a little while to not have to start from scratch in December, the month I’m planning to do most of the work on it. I’ve got the 10 days X-mas break (weekends, holidays, vacation) to really get some work done.
If you follow me on Twitter you might have noticed my “The American President” craziness last night. I was suprised to find so many others among my followers who know and love the movie as well. It’s my favourite romantic comedy and it’s really, really good. At least IMHO. But seriously, what’s not to love about a story written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Rob Reiner? And what better way to unwind on a Saturday evening with a wonderful, timeless, cheesy, but also witty romantic comedy :-)?
Today I managed to unwind a bit outdoors, because we’ve got this spectacular Indian Summer in Germany at the moment. It’s really warm again and the sun brings out the colours of the trees in a way that is breathtaking. My mom and I went to the zoo today, because she hasn’t been there in decades and I really just wanted to get out and do something. I took a bunch of photos with my phone and my real camera and later was too lazy to make two different albums (Zoo/Indian Summer) or to work on the photos a lot. But I think those photos speak for themselves anyway…
